Stitch Express allows you to accept payments from customers around the world using most international cards.
How International Payments Work
While you can sell to international customers, all payments are processed in South African Rand (ZAR).
This means:
- Customers will see the final price in ZAR on Stitch
- They will pay in ZAR, regardless of their location
- Their bank handles the currency conversion into their local currency and will treat this as a foreign transaction
Important: Currency Handling Limitation
Stitch Express does not receive currency information when a transaction is sent for processing.
- We only receive the amount, not the currency
- As a South African payment provider, all transactions are assumed to be in ZAR
This has an important implication:
If your store displays prices in another currency (for example USD), but sends the same numeric value to Stitch, the transaction will still be processed as ZAR.
Example:
If your site shows $10, it will send the value “10”, the customer will be charged R10, not $10.
Best Practice for International Stores
If you are using a currency converter or multi-currency setup:
- Ensure Stitch Express is only shown when ZAR is selected, or
- Ensure your store converts prices to ZAR before sending the transaction
This is the most reliable way to avoid pricing mismatches.
Example
If a product costs R200 and the exchange rate is R20 to $1:
- Your store may display $10
- At checkout, the customer will pay R200
- Their bank will convert this to approximately $10
Additional Fees (Customer Side)
Customers may be charged by their bank:
- A foreign exchange fee, or
- A currency conversion fee
These are set by the customer’s bank and are not controlled by you or Stitch Express.
Stitch Express Fees
International transactions incur a slightly higher processing fee:
- 3.4% per transaction
Stitch Express handles the full payment processing and associated administration.
